RULES OF THE AIR

RULES OF THE AIR ARE FEW AND SIMPLE AND ARE THE INTERNATIONAL COMMON SENSE WAY OF AVOIDING COLLISION WITH ANOTHER AIRCRAFT. IGNORE THEM AND YOU COULD FIND YOURSELF IN SERIOUS TROUBLE. THE MAJOR RULES DEALING WITH AVOIDING OTHER AIRCRAFT ARE WRITTEN BELOW. THESE ARE DETAILED WITHIN THE RULES OF THE AIR SECTION OF THE AIR NAVIGATION ORDER.

  1. OVERTAKING When overtaking whilst ridge soaring, you must pass between the other pilot and the hill. In open air space it is recommended that you overtake on the right.

  2. CONVERGING When approaching another aircraft on a converging course, the craft on your right has the right of way.

  3. APPROACHING HEAD ON When approaching head on, with a risk of collision, both aircraft shall alter their course to the right. If this is unsafe because of proximity to a ridge, the pilot with the ridge on his right has right of way.

  4. AIRCRAFT BELOW Always give way to the lower glider

  5. THERMALS When entering a thermal you shall always circle in the same direction as other gliders which may already be using the thermal. If there is no other glider you m may choose either direction

NOTE:  It is the duty of every pilot to take all possible precautions to avoid a collision.

Midweek Flying Notification Procedure
To notify midweek flying call RAF Wittering on free phone 0800 515544 (Monday - Thursday 0700 to 2300; Friday - Sunday 0700 to 1700), or freefax 0500 300120, and give information in accordance with low-level Civil Aircraft Procedures (CANP).

Full details of this service are in Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) 55/2001 Yellow 52 which is available from the AIS. The RAF then decide whether or not to issue a UKLB NOTAM. There have been, and probably will be again, occasions when a UKLB NOTAM is not issued.

This is not as daunting as it seems. You phone the number, preferably the evening before, and tell the helpful person on the other end of the phone where you intend to fly (site name and grid ref), between which hours. They then call you back to confirm details and give to you a reference number. In all but the rarest instances, the RAF will issue a UKLB NOTAM accordingly.

Below are the links to the current sites. Please note that you should click on the Site name for  more comprehensive site details and current restrictions or hazards. At all times you must rely on your own instincts and eye balls. The decision and responsibility to fly or indeed not to fly, will remain with you, the the Pilot in charge.

For each first visit, we strongly recommend that you go with a more experienced pilot who has flown that site before

Included on each site page is a a map link which you can zoom in or out of to get your bearings and to get to street level navigation. Unfortunately, due to technical problems we are unable, at the present time, to include everything. This should follow in due course
